Rock Solid Families

by Allan Briggs

After a Sunday sermon on family little Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, “That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.”

There is nothing more important than establishing Christian homes with Christian moms and dads who raise Christian children! Establishing Christian homes will turn the tide in this country more than anything else we can do. But when we look at the statistics the news is not good.

Here is some current information on families from the Southern Baptist Council on Family Life:

  • Eighty-eight percent of the children raised in evangelical homes leave church at the age of 18.
  • The divorce ratio among members of evangelical churches is virtually the same as among non- church members.
  • The majority of children in America have less than 10 minutes of significant and meaningful conversation with their parents each week. If you remove the mother, you can measure this statistic in seconds.

In January we will be beginning a new sermon series titled: “Rock Solid Families.” We will be examining the marriages and families we see in the book of Genesis. Believe it or not some of the most famous couples and families in the Bible were profoundly dysfunctional and sinful.

  1. Adam and Eve: failure to protect his wife and murder
  2. Noah’s family: drunkenness and cursing
  3. Abraham’s family: Adultery leading to off-spring Ismael
  4. Lot’s Family: offers his daughters up to be raped by crowd and incest
  5. Isaac’s family: lies and trickery, unloved wife Leah
  6. Jacob’s family: plays favorites, sell brother as slave and lie to dad
  7. David’s family: Adultery, incest, lust, murder, betrayal

Wow! If these families could not establish Godly homes how can we? Is there any hope for Christian marriages and families today? Yes! Of course there is! We believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ can transform lives and marriages and families!

Our desire is for David’s church to be known for strong Godly families! The theme verse for this new series will be Matthew 7:24-25

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock

We want to have rock solid families build on the Rock that is Jesus! This will take all hands on deck! We will need ALL grandparents, and great-grandparents, and moms and dads, and kids and singles working together for our families to succeed. My prayer is that David’s will be famous for Christian marriages and families!

Please join us in January and February for this very important sermon series!
