7-11-17 Refugee Camps

Today we started the day shopping for food at a supermarket and purchased bags of food for 20 families who live in the poor area of Alejuelita. It was a tough day. We saw a lot of poverty. There are 3,000 people living in this small community with very little food and jobs. Most of the people were Nicaraguan immigrants who relocated to Costa Rica in the 1970’s because of a civil war in Nicaragua. Not being legal citizens of Costa Rica makes the situation more difficult and harder for them to find jobs. In the afternoon we went to a daycare. Many of the children stay in the daycare all day while their parents go to work. It’s great because it’s a safe place where they teach the children about Jesus. Let’s hear from one of our team members, Elizabeth Stence:

“The thing that impacted me the most about today was the smiles on the kids’ faces even though some of them may not even have anything to eat today or a place to even sleep. This trip was so emotional for me from the day we got here until now seeing the kids and poverty. THIS trip has been an inspiration to me personally and will change my life forever .”
